Building Accessibility

The Braille Adaptability Kit was created to solve one major problem… accessibility. Designed for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons in conjunction with NTT Data Federal Services, the Braille Kit had to be both rugged and secure as it was to be used in active facilities.

The Language

This project required a thorough understanding of braille writing system. In the case of these designs, the team worked with the QWERTY keyboard. Several unique symbols such as the right and left brackets presented on this keyboard resulted in several new braille translations to be created. These translations were created after extensive user testing and professional advice from the Alabama Institute for The Deaf & Blind (AIDB). Below is our team’s full set of English to Braille translations used for an English QWERTY keyboard.

User Testing

Our team worked extensively with the AIDB to ensure every part was user tested to a 100% translation score. Kyle Dunn performed all of the required testing and provided his feedback & insights. Below are several of the early test samples that were tested by Mr. Dunn.

The Final Product

The final product is MSLA printed in clear resin to match the Chromebook’s clear security build. Each key cap is backed with adhesive for a secure fit during prolonged use.
